High-Definition vs. Standard Definition - It's Not All Hype
For several decades, image transmission for television viewing has relied on the digital transmission method. Prior to that, television signals were transmitted using the analogue system. In the same way that music has revolutionized from analogue cassette tapes to compact discs, a similar change is happening in television viewing. Image transmission uses picture information which results to different levels of picture quality depending on the type of broadcast format that is used. The key to improving picture quality is in maximizing picture information. Digital transmission is more efficient than the analogue process and results to more consistent picture quality. High-definition transmission or HD is a step further in improved digital technology to deliver picture and sound quality that used to be beyond anyone's imagination. HD transmission signals contain up to 5 times the picture information compared to standard definition pictures, which typically use just 500-600 horizontal lines of image pixels. High definition transmission uses 700 to 1000 lines, at its minimum. So an HD TV offers clearer and more detailed images since it contains more picture information. All television signals in varying formats are made up of picture elements called pixels which form the images you see. Using more of these pixels in high-definition transmission results to unmatched picture quality never seen before. Two different picture resolutions are commonly used in today's HD TVs - HD720 or HD1080. The numbers represent the amount of horizontal picture lines used. Most units available in the market come with an HD Ready logo to simplify the process of purchasing HD TVs. These units have at least 720 lines of horizontal picture resolution and are able to display 720 and 1080 line content. They also have all the necessary connections to interface with HD set-top boxes, game consoles and DVD players. This is referred to as High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) compliance, which has become a standard specification in High Definition TV units (HDTVs) . |
